Five wines I wouldn't buy again!

 

In this not so regular segment I have listed five wines I have recently tried that I wouldn't buy again. I share this with you all in the hope that you save your hard earned cash for wines better than those listed below!

1. Rosemount 'Diamond series" 2008 Cab/Merlot - The Rosemount Diamond series does include some decent drops but the Cab/Merlot is not one of them!

2. Montes 2008 Cherub Rose - The 07 Montes Rose was great but the 08 is sour and unpleasant.

3. 2004 Clos Sain Jean Chateaneuf de Pape - At $40 a half bottle this was a real let down. Smelt and tasted like vegemite!

4. Chateau Maris 2004 La Touge Syrah - Bordering on un-drinkable and I would not be at all surprised to be told there is a fault in this wine as I can't see how you could market anything this awful!

5. Botobolar KK's Choice 2005 Shiraz - A small Mudgee producer that missed the mark on this one, rather harsh and unpleasant taste.

Five wines I won't buy again

I thought rather than waste time writing full reviews about bad wines I will simply start a regular, but hopefully not to regular, post to simply list wines that I have tried and wish to never try again!

The first five wines I won't buy again are,

1. Yalumba 2008 Classic Dry White
2. Hardy's Crest Sparkling Rose
3. Martin Codax 2006 Albariño
4. Plantagenet Eros 2007 Rose
5. IGT "Cieolo Famiglia" 2007 Chardonnay

Ingoldby - Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

I won't wast too much time as this wine was just way to acidic. Maybe over time that will soften and the wine could improve as you can tell that underneath the acid are some potentially nice berry flavours. However, the highly acidic nature of the taste means I'm not spending my money on this wine again. It was a shame as the Ingoldby Shiraz from memory isn't bad!

Jane Brooke - Plain Jane Rose 2008

I grabbed a bottle of the Plain Jane Rose while heading down the South Coast to visit family on the weekend. I was in a bit of hurry and the big sign "Managers Choice" sucked me in to grabbing a bottle.

After my first few sips I realised that "Managers Choice" at this particular store translates to "Crap we can't sell without a gimmicky sign". This is not only the worst Rose I remember trying but also amongst the worst wines I have ever tried regardless of grape variety! Serves me right some may say for thinking a $10 bottle with a silly sign on it was going to be any good, however I was happy with the notion it would be plain... but it was so much worse!

Price - $10 at an independent retailer on the NSW South Coast
Region - Margaret River, Western Australia
Recommended? Not recommended! How this wine was bottled and marketed is beyond me.

Cargo Road "Trophy" 2005 Riesling

Someone recommended I visit the Cargo Road winery on a short visit to the Orange wine region on Sunday so I did just that. While the artwork for the wine labels is attractive I am afraid not much attracts me to their wine.

The 2005 Riesling is a good example as it apparently won the best Riesling in NSW at some point and is $25 a bottle at the cellar door, which is not cheap for Riesling when you consider you can get brands such as Petaluma or Pikes, Clare Valley Rieslings for less than that!

My tasting notes on the Cargo Road 2005 Riesling at the time I first tried it are "Not good. Cheap taste... goon like even. Wouldn't have again".

Then I tried it a second time and wrote "Wasn't as offensive as the first try but still not recommended"
